History

VentureTalent.net was born in the after-shock of the dot com bust. Originally operated as a local Ottawa ad hoc group supporting networking of start-ups and Venture Talent. More than a decade later, little venture capital has returned to fund the thousands of startups that are still attempting to make a go of it. Connecting talent willing and able to invest with the start ups that need their services is a important today as ever.

The Vision

In today's tech world most Venture Capital is spent on labour. The cost of hardware has fallen considerably and the advent of Cloud Services allows computing infrastructure to be rented by the hour, with no up front investment. Given the lack of cash and the abundance of under utilised talent, we thought it made sense to connect talent that was willing to make an investment of time and effort with start-ups that could use their expertise. Why not bypass seeking venture capital from a third party and instead seek the investment directly from potential employees.

The Deals

So what are venture-talent deals? Fist - they are deals made specifically between new ventures and potential employees that provide services from the talent to the venture. They can be anything from full-time/full-pay contracts to volunteer services. It is up to the ventures and the talent to make deals that work for them. These deals are not vetted, over-seen, endorsed or approved by VentureTalent.net in any way.

The Reality

Matching new ventures with great talent is not easy. Most new ventures fail to achieve traction within the target time. While many engagements do not result in long term employment they can benefit both parties helping to achieve short term goals.
